In October 2025, Martek’s Managing Director, Derek Galloway, embarked on a breathtaking and physically demanding journey through the Peruvian Andes — the legendary Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The four-day trek took Derek and his team across high-altitude mountain passes, dense rainforest, ancient ruins, and dramatic terrain in support of a cause close to the heart: raising awareness and funds for Childhood Dementia Initiative (CDI).
Derek’s adventure, which began in Cusco at an altitude of over 3,300m, required significant physical endurance — including summiting the notorious Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,215m. Over the course of the expedition, he battled rain-soaked trails, steep descents dubbed “The Gringo Killers,” and punishing terrain. Yet, despite the blistered feet and unpredictable weather, the reward was worth it: sunrise at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and a misty, awe-inspiring view over Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most iconic archaeological wonders.
Throughout the trek, Derek and fellow adventurers were also joined by Megan Maack, CEO of Childhood Dementia Initiative. Her powerful story — as a parent of two children affected by the condition — brought home the urgent need for increased awareness, research, and support for families impacted by this devastating illness. Derek’s participation helped raise funds for CDI’s mission to better understand, treat, and ultimately find a cure for a disease that affects over 50,000 children worldwide every year.
“This was no ordinary walk in the woods,” Derek noted. “It was an unforgettable physical and emotional challenge, made all the more meaningful by the cause it supported.”
At Martek, we believe in stepping up to challenges. Derek’s commitment to this trek reflects the values we live by: resilience, compassion, and a drive to make a difference.
